| | also working on... While posting some pics on the carving bench I just completed, I thought I'd also offer some of a few other things I'm working on.
My wife has this family reunion coming up in October, and she asked me to make a few gifts for some out of country relitaves. The plaques are Pine and the burned image is Bluenose II under sail.
I am also finishing off a new cane for myself, in Mahogany. Doing a Perigrine Falcon cane this time and it will sit in a hex shaped shaft. I am including more chest area than I normally do and the tops of the wings.
Have to start painting soon.

| | Re: also working on... Thanks Gary and Joy, I like to keep busy.
I was just reading another post from a beginner and he was pointing out the benefits of more information. So.........
The plaques are cut from Pine (Select Pine, no knots) and the shape cut on the band saw, then the edges are sanded smooth and the edging is routered in. Then more sanding of the router marks and final smooth sanding of the surface up to 220 grit. Sketch on the image and start burning, I use a Razortip, small spear to begin and spear scaler for waves and shading.
The cane: The shaft is cut from a Mahogany board on the band saw (Laguna 14" with a 3/4" Resaw King blade for nice straight cuts)and shaped (hexagon this one) with hand plane and spoke shave, The top is cut from a board (also of Mahogany) and the rough shape is cut out also on the bandsaw (actually a smaller saw, Delta 10", using a smaller blade 3/16") I then shape the handle using a combination of knives and some power (Foredom and Dremel) and when the rough shape is ready, I drill both shaft and top for 3/4" dowel and assemble. On this cane I wanted to show the tops of wings, and more body, so I added pieces to the top left and top right side and clamped till dry, then continued shaping, this time using power alone. Finally, shape in feather groups, then individual feathers, and burn in the detail. Drill the eye holes and install the eyes (13mm glass) using A & B epoxy.
All ready for painting now. I'll be using acrylics, watered down and finally a finish of a mix of: BLO, Turpentine and Gloss Spar Varnish, dryed and then waxed and buffed.

| | Re: also working on... Nice job Bob. I spent quite a bit of time on your site last week. (never go online on the weekend) and was really impressed with it. I especially like your celtic knot carvings and canes. I also do scrollsaw work and one of my future projects is the Bluenose Intarsia I think the pattern is by Fred Martin |

| | Re: also working on... Ships are GREAT and I've watched the "Titanic" at least a zillion times Bob... but I really love it when you're carving canes again! Hope that your wife keeps at it on you about this aspect of your carving!
Thanks for taking the time to post some of the details because it's also helpful to some of us veteran carvers too. I was going to ask about how you got the unique patterned feathers but now I see. Thanks for carving another cane!
