Thanks for all the replies and for looking. We just got pounded with snow so my progress is slow right now. I hope to have some new pics posted soon. Joe

I'm impressed!! I will assume you drew your own pattern?? When you start looking for glass for the front?? consider a curved (hemispherical shape) lens......that will really set it off!! great job, thanks for sharing jerry

What type of wood are you using, pine, bass? I've had an idea for a grandfather clock for a long time too. I want to carve my genealogy on one side and my wifes on the other, just with different vignettes. Also you might try etching on the glass front. I did that for a small pendulum clock. Good luck!

Jerry..Thanks! I did draw my own pattern. I do want to buy the video at some point as it comes with a pattern of the clock Rolf is making. I think that one is much nicer than mine. I hadn't thought of using glass. I was planning on chip carving roman numerals right on the face, I roughed it out convex in the center and I will carve out some details on the outer circle which is concaved. Thanks for the suggestion. Deweyrf91... I'm using bass for this clock. I do have a beautiful piece of cherry that I will use for my 2nd and 3rd version. Etching the glass sounds like a really cool idea. I'll look into using glass, Thanks! Joe

Beautiful work! Now it needs some wall sconches to hang beside it. |

Thanks Joy for the nice comment. Sconces would be nice and probably really fun to carve! I started to add some detail on the face or rim of the clock. I will now start to focus more on cleaning up. It's taken me a lot longer than I thought just to get to this point. I did learn a good lesson out of it. Make sure to get all the levels correct when you rough out. I found myself trying to move on to shaping too soon. After I spent time shaping, I realized what I was working on was too high so I would bring it down some more then shape again...and again. I basically tripled the work. When I finish this one and start the next, I'll make sure I focus on levels first. Joe

Wow Joe -- whatever amount of time you're spending on this .... it's well worth it. Really beautiful.

It's coming along really nicely. I'm learning from your experiences. The depth is a hard thing to gauge before you have gone through a successful acanthus design. Christina |
