Default 78th Highlander Sentry

This carving is a representation of a 78th Highlander Sentry on the Plains of Abraham after the defeat of the French under Montcalm in Quebec , 1759. The Highlanders fought under General James Wolfe, who was killed in the battle, as was his opponent, General Montcalm. Strange too, as Wolfe had been part of the army sent into the highlands of Scotland and crushed the highland clans rebellion, so bloodlly at Collodon, in 1745. History has some strange twists and turns.

The sentry wears the kilts, dirk, sporan and clutches his Brown Bess and his trusty Claymore is strapped to his hip.

The wood is Basswood, and he stands 10" high, but I can see I have to do some work on the finish, as it has too much shine. I can see I have to keep practicing, as I'm not happy with the final piece.

The brutality of Wolfe and all of his ilke here in Scotland was as you mentioned barbaric. I 'll keep of my soap box.

The carving is great and thats what matters.

That's a fine representation of a Highlander. Very nice work, both carving and painting. Thanks for sharing.

I like the detail on those stockings. I think you're being too hard on yourself. The shine brings out the color. How the heck did they fight a war wearing a kilt?

Bob, it is not just your carving ability that makes your posts so interesting. It is also the historical information that you provide that makes them so special.

Hi Bob: This looks like a fun piece. It's apparent you did your research. Isn't it amazing how many tartans there are and how many sporans are available. I can't tell the kind of sealer you used. Some are hi gloss and make the paint shine. A matte spray takes care of that. Did you consider using a wash of color? I once did a Scottish santa of my own design complete with kilt, sporan and bagpipes. It was for a fellow worker who was from Scotland. Needless to say it was labor intensive. I like your guy.
