Well it's a fine piece Keoma however it was done.

But now that you've admited the use of p*w*r tools you can no longer claim "hand carved" on your advertising and you'll never be able to enter these into carving competitions that rule out assemblies. Also your status as a true artist is now in question and we'll have to send the carving police to inspect your premises for signs of secret CNC use.

We're WATCHING you. <grin>

Keoma, your hair combs are beautiful. Your imagination and hands made them. Are they about the size of a hand? Wondering, cause I need to make something for my wild wavy hair. How long do you make the prongs? I would not copy your ideas, I got my own. Oh and I have the same herb book you have in your picture....sharon

Thanx Sharon! Great Book isn't it?
This comb is a bit smaller than my hand. As a rule of thumb, I usually make a comb from the tip of my finger to the bottom of my palm. Tines are usually 4-5".
Thicker hair needs wider spaces between them.
Good luck making them! They are loads of fun. Now if you'll excuse me, I am on the run from the P.T. Police!

THANKS! I'm thinking about biting out chunks of wood on my next project. Then I can say no hands or tools of any kind were used.

Hope it'll be from balsa :P

I would like to make one of these for my lady, she has long hair that is quite fine and straight. I've no experience with this though, I don't even know how they are worn. Any tips for a newbie?

oh yeah! yOU BET!
Your lady will need a smaller tight teethed little comb. Don't worry about how to wear them...if she has long hair...she will know. Hang on, I will sketch you one! I have lots of pictures of combs and different styles in the links in my signature, or if you want, I can pm or email you some pics.
Sharon! You made me snort orange soda! Yes! Lets bite it out!

Ok! This is a small comb. check the length and consistency of her hair, and that can help you adjust the length accordingly.
1) Find a chunck of tightgrained hardwood.
2)find another of the same wood or contrasting color to use as strength across the top
3)glue the to together. When dried, using a band saw or scroll saw cut the basic shape and the teeth.
4)trim the teeth to the shape you want, making sure the tips are perfect so they don't grab hair.
5) Carve your design in the blank space and then sand smooth.
6) I like to use an oil finish or a gloss. Depends on the look your after.
7) pictures so we can see!
Oh! Make sure you choose a color that contrasts well with her hair.

Looking at your sketch Keoma...you have the grain going crossways...? The tines would be much much stronger if the grain ran with them.
