Well, this is actually my third try. I started on this snowman and really messed it up, so I started over and this is were I am. I have not done the eyes or mouth yet(circles). Any tips or ideas on relieving smaller circles? If anyone has any ideas on what else I could do to this carving, please let me know. Critiques are also welcome. I have not decided on how I am going to finish this, so more ideas welcomed. This snowman is by Ivan Whillock I found in another magazine. Thank you for looking, Todd |

I like it very much. If it were mine, I would use color on it. I love the position of the hat and that great shadow you accomplished under the brim. Gently running a pretty small gouge around in a circle to scribe the shape as a stop cut, and then gently rounding down the inner circle works really well for round eyes. To make charcoal look raised, you can just cut towards the circle. Don't know if that helps or not. For a second relief carving, you're doing very well. Christina . |

Todd,I think you did a nice job and seeing it was really your 1st relief carving. As Thor said, add some color to it. You could paint the background where you could add some snow on some trees plus paint the snow man and child. Always when posting a carving let us know what type of wood and the size of the carving, thats helps us understand alot more about your carving. Just keep it up,so far you are doing good. Thanks for sharing it with us. Forrest

That's a nice scene. I'm not one for doing shallow reliefs but I'd like too. It almost appears like the snowman is leaning in to allow the young fellow to reach his head with the hat. Patrick |
