Exclamation 2 X 4 Challenge?

Okay all you carvers and non-carvers or whatever you want to call yourselves, time to rock the boat!

I had an inspiration today ........ (one of the few lately, it's been a long winter) ......... how about a challenge? We all get asked about using "special" woods, that our work magically appears from, people sometimes just don't understand or can comprehend, that it isn't the wood that makes a carving, it's the carver, it lies in his/her mind / talent / skill / immagination or a total of all of those. I often explain that just the ordinary end of a 2 X 4 can be used to create a work of art.

Well, how about it? Let everyone who is interested, take the end of an ordinary construction grade 2 X 4, say 12" of it and create something! No limits as to time, tools, glue or paint/finish, just limited to that one stick of wood.

Well, tell me I have cabin fever; tell me I'm nuts.....aren't we all.....but give it a try. The most creative entry wins a cookie! Just kidding...... the best entry (all entry's in fact) wins a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, gets to express themselves and show the world what they can do with an ordinary, humble 2 X 4.

Bob

Hisart here, most all my work is with "found wood" of which pine/fir 2x4's are included. Check out my site and see for yourself.

Well Bob, I get inspiried every time my little bride hits me with that "Dang club".

It was carved out of a 2x4. Ain't doing it again. Can't handle two clubs!

Kidding aside. Great l. Needed something like this to get me jump started again.

All this bark and basswood and I sit staring out it all. Nothing pops out and grabs me. Just sit there looking and looking and nada. Nope not a thing. Slump maybe. Maybe a 2x4 will get me started. No dear! Not that "Dang club".
Geez, I really thinks she enjoys swinging that "dang club".

Bob,
You ARE nuts! I want my cookie!
I'm going to do what Dick Tilley does and burn my 2x4 scraps!
By the way, it's a good idea!

I know I will answer this before she does but you should see what Callynne carved from 2 X 4s that was what all her wood was when she started. BTW I will definatly try something I also like a challenge.

Funny you should mention this challenge. I just got done hauling scrap 2x4's up from the barn. I had cut two things from them already. Now I have to wait for new band saw blades to get more cut.
I dont suppose slicing them counts?

how about carving a 2x4 out of a log, would that count? lol...Remember a M.A.S.H program, a guy hands Hawkeye a 2x4 he carved and Hawkeye said "it looks like a 2x4!" the guy answered "Thanks, it used to be round" ha ha
