I've never carved with a chainsaw but I have cut a lot of firewood. Be really careful as that tool can do a great deal of damage in a hurry.
That being said...You Go Girl!

I am not a woman but I am blind and I chainsaw carve. Just be careful and concious of your surroundings and remember where the chainsaw is at all times when running it. It will get to you before you know it.

Hi Tammy I am assuming thats your name there are a lot of lady chainsaw carvers and most of them as good as their male counterparts. These gals do not fit the mental picture you would imagine. The majority of the ones I know are really feminim and petit gals. It takes some muscle to throw those chainsaws around but these girls dont have any problem at all. Some of the Japanese girls do some increadible stuff and girls like Alicia Carlton, Zoe Boni, are really good at what they do. I dont know of any of them that teach. I know that Robbin on this message board teaches I dont know where you are from, he is in Ontario Canada. Welcome aboard anyway we have a lot of chainsaw carvers here maybe you could pick our brains on what you want to do.
Colin

Hi there,
I've done "some" chainsaw carving, and recommend safety equipment first and foremost. helmet, face shield, good boots, and chaps, and ear protection.
I use an ms170 steil. I haven't converted to a carving bar yet, but will soon.
There are some terrific women carvers out there, and with the power of the saws, their work really isn't that much different than the guys' work.
Good luck to you, but try to find someone who can teach you nearby if possible. It would really help for safety and cutting the learning curve.

Hi Tam,
It ain't about the gender thing it's about the art.

Like anything, a worker is only as good as his/her tools (how's that for gender balance). If you don't know much about chainsaws read up on them and learn basic maintenance and the limitations of the saw. Don't let anyone fool you, in order to accomplish the carving that you see in your head, a lot of other tools are used as well.

Chainsaws = big work = heavy lifting. Plan carefully and avoid straining your lower back.

Good luck,

Merv

Hi There when I was"3 month younger" I carved with a chainsaw .I went with an electric one because my hands could not hang on to the heavy gas mashines. I enjoyed doing it very much .I only had pictures to look at what I wanted to do ,and then let your saw and your mind wander.
Go and enjoy it
Alice
