Hi Christine, my thought would be of course marine life carved into the two outer projections. Like other small marine fish, plant life, shells--you could have them spirialing around the two outside pieces. Then two whales meeting in mid-air in the center piece. Sort of like whales kissing--don't think they do but would look kinda cool. I totally agree with Bill 'stylized' for sure.
Also do ware lung protection over in the Power Carving Forum we have been having a really good discussion ('Dust') on power carving protection. Check it out!
Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do with your project.
Kathy

Depending on the part of the Navy you're in; it would be Dolphins or Two Carp eating out of a trash can.

EdO,
I think I may stay with Native art or marine life. My son's an NFO in the Navy and may take offense at my carving something from the submariners.

Having spent a number of years in the Aviation Community, I think you may be making a wise decision.

I read that if you soak it in warm water for a while first it is easier to carve at least with a knife like scrimshaw.I don't think the sailors on the boats had power tools and it creates alot less dust
