Somewhere back in time I came upon plans for a stand to hold logs for carving. Now I can't find the article again. Can anyone direct me? I'm wanting a stand that holds logs and lets me carve standing up. This wasn't just a sawhorse but a bit more complicated.

Can you remember anything at all about the plans? I could use such a thing. We might have to reinvent the wheel. Who cares? |

I might have been given a clue: The Rockwell Jaw Horse with the log-holding accessory. My next and immediate problem is that I don't have the space in my shop! |

The Jaw Horse is the best clamp and project holder I have ever used. And the log holder works great.

Randy: I read that the jaws have substantial clamping pressure. How much/far do the teeth dig into the wood? Any/all the woods I can get here without great expense are quite soft, like willow, alder, aspen, poplar/cottonwood and my favorite, western red cedar. |

Steve, I believe the plans you may be looking for can be found in Carving Magazine Issue #30. Title of article: Adjustable Log Cradle, by James Barr.. Hope this helps. Larry

RV, The clamping pressure is significant, but adjustable. The grip is so good without the log clamp that I would get them on an as needed basis. If you find you need the extra reach, say, over the midpoint horizontally, you could mod some 1/4" plywood buffers. |

Think I'll pass on the whole idea. Every alder log I have has 10-15 splits under the bark. Big ones. Totalled. Looked over some 24" cedar logs last week before the snow, looked great from the road = nothing but knots on the back side and without splitting them, who knows how many overgrown knots on the side that I could see. Enough snow since Nov 10, I doubt that I could get in there with 4x4 & chains, only to find the logs frozen into the ground.

I have a Jaw Horse but being 5' 7" tall I had to shorten the legs by 6" to have a comfortable carving height for those small pieces. What I prefer is a hydraulic table with a thick slab glued on top. I then attach the log to the slab using deck 3 screws. The biggest advantage of this is the adjustable height and it's heavy load capacity.
