| | Re: Vise for holding sticks Great idea Kenny. I have a whole box of leather, and some will be used exactly as you suggest (in the vise to prevent marring the stick). But the design for this vise system isn't mine. I've seen them in lots of places (usually attached to a bench). Thanks Tom H |

| | Re: Vise for holding sticks Yep Dave, I carved a Hickory stick ONCE, Never again. Should have known bettter as hickory is used for hammer handles and axes and hoes and, well ya get the drift. Hards wood I carved in. But the Fatherinlaw loved his walking stick. He uses it all the tim, well that in that yucca stick.
Burnings would be the idea way for sure. |

| | Re: Vise for holding sticks I am such an inexperienced carver that I really hesitate posting a photo of an actual carving. I have so much to learn. Maybe the photography is bad enough to hide some real sloppy work. The stick on the right is a morrel mushroom hunting stick, next one- plain one face walking stick 60", next one to left sample stick with practice faces, and the last to the left another practice short stick with 8 faces. Shoot, all my work at this stage is practice. Tom H

| | Re: Vise for holding sticks Tom, you are doing just fine. I've been carving for 35 years and I still feel each piece is just a practice piece for the next one. That perfect one is somewhere off in the future.....if I ever live long enough to get there! I've learned, it isn't about the finished product, it's about the carving. Enjoy yourself. Those are fine looking sticks.

| | Re: Vise for holding sticks That is what I was wondering if your design allowed a pivet.
I was wondering if is a good dimension for walking sticks? 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 57" |

| | Re: Vise for holding sticks Guess that would depend on how you were going to use it, as a cane or a walking stick.
Personally, in using one for hikeing, a 72" one or 6 foot by 1 1/2 inch.Need all the support I can get the older I get!
BTW Tom, some good looking walking sticks and don't worry, I am still practiceing also. |

| | Re: Vise for holding sticks You folks are scarin me about the hickory walking sticks. Union Fork and Hoe Company has a handle factory where I live, and I am told, damn near give away hickory that is sized for canes and walking sticks. I plan on finding out and try to power carve one.
