Tom, love the setup!

Did you make the vise or design it yourself? Simple looking and small, nice if you don't have a large work area (me )

Would it be possible to take some close-up pictures of just the ends of the vise so I can see a little more clearly how it goes together? What are the red "thingies" on the top? Is this where you would put the wingnuts?

Love it!

Linda

Linda, The designs for vises like this are everywhere. The red "thingies" were spacers to get more space in the vise for larger diameter sticks. The carving "cubby" has handles on the sides so it can be moved around. The attached apron does catch the chips, so my wife lets me carve anywhere. Here's a close up of the right hand side vise. I will take the suggestion and replace the wingnuts with knobs. Thanks Tom H

Thanks Tom! This looks easy to make. I started carving a year ago and haven't carved much since (discouraged ).

I tried carving a maple staff, holding it in my lap. Managed to pull all the tendons in my wrist and was sidelined for 8 weeks---real bummer! I've been trying to find a "simple" solution for a year. Most stick vises are large and cumbersom and don't adapt easily to portable carving.

You've inspired me! Maybe I can get to finishing that staff now!

By the way, I LOVE the stick you have in the vise! BEAUTIFUL!!!

To expand your design. Try a strip of leather or light foam where you clamp down on your stick. Should help in perventing gouge marks or dents on the stick.

Hi Ho been doing bits and pieces, all in Basswood, but this staff has me in a corner. Promised to 11 year old Grandson last June and he keeps asking! I think I might have found a solution to carving the maple, I'll post if it works!

I have a full size loon on the vise, a Blue Heron in a bag (he's not happy there <g>), dozens of eggs and assorted basswood blanks and practice pieces. Hubby is about to put his foot down, the garage is filling with found wood I keep picking up on the beach and in the woods! Now hows that for reverse roles???

Lots of ideas, just got to get off my a** and get started. Only thing in my way is painting and repairing the inside of 3,000 sq. ft of house! Hubby retired and the kids moved out (I know, they'll be back ) so we're painting and/or refinishing all the walls, baseboards, wooden cabinets, new flooring, etc., etc. Too tired to carve when all finished!

Several carving projects promised to friends though, so need to set aside some time. Then there's the plan to go gather sticks....

Let me know when they invent a 48 hour day---thought that came with retirement!

Linda
