Default Vice For Caricatures

For those of you interested here is the information on the jig I use for caricatures. It came from the Spring 2004 issue of WCI. Its called the Poor Man's Vise by Lynn Diel. For mine I used 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood. Its a cabinet grade plywood that has no voids and is excellant to work with. I pretty much stuck with Lynn's plans except for the pivot block. On his he had a 5" on mine I made the 5" and a 8&12" pivot blocks for different heights. On the left side is the knob for tightening the pivot block in position and on the right side I used a 3/16 pin to hold the angle of the pivot block. For clamps I use a 12,18& 36 for different applications. I have several other store bought clamps but I use this one the most.

Ron,
Great idea! It looks like it works great too. You could glue a piece of spongy closed-cell-foam on the ends of the clamp to help it grip the carving better too, if the original grip surfaces are hard. Take care!

I forgot to mention the clamps should have a soft rubber pads. You could also do like Wade said. Thanks for stirring my brain Wade.

Ron,
That is a nice vise for sure. Thanks for posting it.
I need to build one like as I am a hand holder but see times that if I had a vise like the one you posted, things would be a little better.
I have a pipe vise that I took off of ALA's plans but, Does it get used? NO!
Thanks for posting, Neat idea for a vise/clamping carvings.

Great vice Ron. Like Kenny I have the pipe vice and don't use it but I think this is going to work for me. Wonder how I missed that issue of the magazine? Don
