Default Re: using super glue to reinforce cross grain?

I sure could have used this thread the other day as a reminder. I was carving a bird (swallowtail) on the end of a hair stick for my wife. Wouldn't you know, I dropped it on one of the tail forks and it popped off. Not too bad, I was thinking just glue it back on. Not. I searched everywhere, couldn't find it. It must have fallen into the patio drain, right below my chair.

If I had remembered to soak the tail it might not have broken off. Oh, Well.

One thing you have to remember when soaking a piece of wood with super glue it that it basically turns it to plastic. While it won't break as easy as before it will still break. It won't sand very easily. As it becomes a solid structure with the glue paint will definitely act differently especially if you paint wet like I do. Also, as Mike said, be extremely careful if you burn detail in a glue soaked area. Otherwise your wife or someone else will find you passed out on the floor.

As I said earlier, I only use it to reinforce the outer edges of something, i.e., the end of a mustache. For a leg or something like that I would use a dowel or do the piece as an attachment with the grain running to give the piece the most strength. That way I know it won't break.
