Default Tool Roll modification

I decided I wanted to try a tool roll for carrying around some of my gouges. In looking at different catalogs, they didn’t seem very complicated and I already have a daughter who can sew! So I got some canvas and had her sew me up one that would hold approximately 20 full size tools ( I’m an optimistic kind of carver). That seemed a good size for me, but the pockets were too deep for my palm tools. I eventually came up with the modification shown. I cur a slit in the pocket and used iron-on adhesive to glue back the flaps. This makes it the perfect size for palm tools, but I can still use it for the larger tools also. I imagine that a leather tool roll could be modified by just carefully cutting a slit. Anyways, it holds a good selection of tools and rolls up into a nice little bundle.

I like the way the pockets are off-set from one another (top row and bottom row). Also like a place for a pencil. Looks like a great deal to me. Thanks for posting. Dick

Great job Mike. Back when I first started I had my wife modify a couple of Home Depot aprons into tools rools similar to that. Then when I got into some serious painting and wanted to protect my brushes I had her sew me up a special brush roll so that I could carry them back and forth when we travel, Like they say, ingenuity is the mother of invention!

Mike,
That large rounded nose tool in the middle of the second pic. Did you nose it? How well does it work?
Thanks

Very nicely done. The palm tool modification really is a grand idea.

Thanks for posting real photos too rather than those tiny tiny tiny thumbnails that I never open.

Hi Mike,
Your daughter did a great job on that. It's nice to have just what you need. I agree that the commercial tool rolls are lacking a lot. Do you have any problems with the sharp end of the tool, poking through the canvas?

Years ago, I had some real heavy duty denim material laying around from an old sewing project where I made jackets for my husband, 2 daughters and self.

It was real heavy..... I made a tool roll but found that the sharp end of the gouge was trying to poke through the material. I happen to also be an old leather tooler and had some rolls of leather laying around. (can you tell that I rarely get rid of anything?) Anyhow, I cut some wallet leather to fit the areas where the sharp ends of the tools would lay, also cut some round "washers" from leather too for the outside of the roll to keep the rivets from pulling through the denim. It has worked out really well for me. The leather is a bit scarred but the tools have not gone through it.... The roll is at least 15 years old now. It isn't pretty but it works well.
