| | Tool rack Just thought I'd share a picture of a tool rack I put together over the holidays.
I'd been wanting a simple rack design to have on my bench while carving to keep things close at hand, yet safe from my fingers and the floor.

| | Re: Tool rack Great idea Mike! I have mine in a bag but that makes them sometimes hard to get to. I like the idea of having everything out in front of you so you can see what tool you need next! Nice work!

| | Re: Tool rack Have you been snoopin 'round my shop,,that looks pretty familiar. It is a great solution to keeping them straight without the edges banging together. One thing I added was a long dowel that goes from one edge to the other just at the handle /shank point to keep them from falling out if and when I move them about or take to a job site. A handle on the back tips it slightly and allows me to carry it like a briefcase. You 've got a good design there. |

| | Re: Tool rack nice rack,
wouldnt work for me thats where i keep my monitor ha!
I have been thinking on the idea of the legionary ' better tool rack for years',
more like a big machinist tool chest with clear drawer fronts, drawers tilted so front is deeper than back and handles would stay in place better gravity or even trays...
i built dressers, but never a chest like this freestanding one like im thinking up, but with a changing plan as often as i think of the idea, the dimensions change too often so i put it off...
Just cant nail it down |

| | Re: Tool rack Great job Mike! Shops shaping up nice, too.
I found an easier solution to the tool storage though. I bought a utility knife holster at Lowe's for "ol' Reliable", and keep my knife sharp and ready to carve with it. The rest of my tools stay sharp and organized in plastic boxes in a 12" wide Craftsman tool bag unless I ABSOLUTELY need them--which I usually avoid since I'm too comfortable to get up to get them!

| | Re: Tool rack Mike,
That's a good, efficient tool rack. For a long time I tried to figure out a better tool storage that small kids couldn't get to. My bench is not very deep (its a small, cheap computer desk but works ok). I ended up buying one of those bucket boxes that swivel. So far I think it's going to work out good. When I put the tool rack back in the bucket and the lid on the lid stays on nice and tight. The lid is not very easy to get off which I like for a safety issue.
I really like your bench too. Was the bench your own design also? Did you get those Nativity figures carved for your friends?
Take care,

| | Re: Tool rack Here is a couple of pictures of one of my tool racks. The markings you see are my tactile or raised markings that I put on all my knives and gouges. The marks on the tools match the ones on the racks. Works for me so I don't get cut and know where they are. Just an idea.
