I just got back from Daone and athough you weren't sitting near your tool box when I was making the rounds I did see and take note of your tool box. Pretty neat looking. Can't remember what room I saw it in.

I'm always jealous of carvers with a handful of tools as they obviously don't need dozens of tools to create 'good looking stuff '. I have the "Tool Bucket" to hold mine and it holds a gaggle of tools. Get it?

My first time at Doane and can't wait to sign up for next years class. The 33rd year of this event. If any carver wants to spend a week carving this is a place you should consider. Excellant instructors, good atomsphere and great carvers. The only problem is the days go much too fast.

BTW, I used a magnet within a knife protector and found some corrosion on the blade. Can't imagine what caused it but now I check often to ensure there is now problem. Hasn't been and it makes me think something was on the blade when I stored it for a while.

Sure would be nice to have a lapel pin or something like it to display your WCI name "handle" when at these meetings so we could say hi wouldn't it? I remember a thread a while back that talked about this subject and thought the management was going to consider offering something in the future. Haven't heard anything since. I know Bob D. said they were very busy just keeping up. I made a homemade button with my WCI name "xsailer" at the KC show last year and met several message board carvers when they saw it.

I had a friend who always wore a lapel pin with his name on it, he carved himself while working in The Largest Hobby Shop in Des Moines. Sure set him apart from the crowd!

It is great fun with folks of your own kind, carving. For one week, carve morning to night, stay at the dorm, eat at the cafeteria get next morning do same thing. Great instructors good time.

Hi Bob,
Sorry I missed you at Doane. We had a good time carving and painting, my wife did a great job on the Santa plate and gourd birdhouse she did in her class. I felt that the tool box worked pretty well but it needs some refinements. First I need to address the uncovered ends of the chisels stored in the racks in the upper part of the box. HiHo mentioned that the business ends of the chisels were exposed and likely to cut one when reaching in to take them out for use on the bench. Right now I just cover them with a towel and hope that reminds me to be careful. I think a strip of wood, possible held on by magnets or the pipe insulation suggested by HiHo is at the top of possible solutions. The way I do the partions in the drawers they are not fastened or glued in, and in carrying it in the car trunk, moving it in and out, one of the partitions’ came loose and prevented the drawer from coming out. Wasn’t hard to fix but a nuisance. I like making partitions this way as they can be changed whenever you can get better use of the space.
We had a good trip home, stopping to see friends and a Grandchild in Iowa. I spent much of my early years in the Midwest but each time we go back I am surprised at how miserable the humidity is. It’s really hot here in the desert but I think the humidity is worse, at least for me. We have another Grandson getting married in Sept. and I’m hard at making a Blanket chest for their wedding present. I couldn’t believe the price of hardwoods, especially the Cherry I’m using for the chest.
After the wedding we are going to Estes Park for a couple of days then to WI for a visit with my wife’s sister and coming back through Springfield, IL to visit the Lincoln stuff there. Then we will drive to Elk City OK for a week of carving with the Bishops’.

I think the name tags are a great idea. Maybe WI could sponsor a contest for the best design and run an article on how to carve the winner or first and second place designs. If the space for the name was somewhat uniform WI could work in an article about how to carve your name in it.
