Default Tip on fixing small chip

Well, as usual, necessity is the mother of invention, I have been working on a cowboy sheriff from Dave Stetsons pattern and got well into the carving before I found out the piece of basswood I was working on was junk! Too far into it to quit, so I finished, and about everytime I touched it a little minute piece of the wood would chip out! The worst and one I couldn't recarve to fix was on the side of the nose, so.......I had purchased some of the new elmers stainable wood glue....it has fibres in it, so thought it might do a little repair, it did a good job, had to apply a little dot of it twice, but the color isn't bad either! I am going to paint it anyway, but thought this might help someone..........doubt I am the only one with some sad wood! (beginning to wonder if its the dryness here in the desert that is causing my problem?)

They also have an epoxy that comes in a stick about 8" long. Comes wrapped in a cellophane. The hardener is in a coating around an inner core of the filler material. Just cut off a piece large enough to fill the mistake or accident and knead it until it is all one color. You have several minutes to work with it. Don't know if it will take stain or not (would have to check the package) but it works pretty good and it is carvable. Think I've seen it at Lowe's and/or Home Depot.

Yes I have that and have used it for years, but this was a very small chip too small for the epoxy putty.
