| | Re: Termites!!! If you have ants in your wood, there'll be no speculation.
But I'll speculate that your wood is infested with one of the types of powder post beetles. That's is why the furniture store promptly removed your carvings.
Do a Google search for powder post beetles for more info. |

| | Re: Termites!!! You might try putting the carving (or log) in a large garbage bag and sealling it up after giving it a good shot of Raid or the like. I've done that on some pieces of drift wood that looked a little "buggy". |

| | Re: Termites!!! I've read of people putting the wood in garbage bags, filling the bag with exhaust from your car, taping it shut a few days. It's supposed to work well. |

| | Re: Termites!!! I have had this problem before, and using the exhaust pipe from a vehicle really does work.
I live in Texas were every nasty bug you can think lives here. I was given a peice of old black walnut, and after stripping off the bark, it had a ton of powder post beatles. The wood was sentimental to a friend of mine so I could not just throw it away.
I read in a carving magazine within the last year, an article by Joe Dillet. He showed how you can do this. Just fill up a garbage bag with exhaust and let if flow for about 3 minutes. Seal off the ends and put it inside another bag. Seal that off and let it sit for about a week. The carbon monoxide is what kills thems.
I also tried this on a piece of wood I knew had termites in it. After sitting in the dark for about a week in the exhausted bag, I cut the wood open and found them all dead dead dead.
Wow, that felt better!
Thanks,

| | Re: Termites!!! i treat all found wood much the same way as BrianMac has described.except that i place the plastic bags into a large garbage can, once the plastic bags have been filled with carbon monoxcide and sealed i just put the lid on the can tightly and leave closed for at least 1wk.
the sealed garbage can, is mainly a camoflage so someone(you can guess who) doesn't think i am unleashing swarms of bugs into the garage.

| | Re: Termites!!! The eggs are killed also. The carbon monoxide penetrates the soft eggs and takes care of them also.

| | Re: Termites!!! The carbon monoxide penetrates the soft eggs and takes care of them also. When oxygen is displaced by carbon monoxide the organism suffocates and is poisoned.

| | Re: Termites!!! A large piece of very old ironwood was given to me as a base for my sea turtle..but unfortunately it had layed out in the yard for years....full of termites....I first put it in a garbage bag and put it up to the exhaust and tied it off, sat there for a couple of days, then took the whole thing still tied off and put in the freezer for 2 or 3 days...bugs were dead...you decide which LOL | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
