| | What is that stuff? Burning pens, for me, have always been for making cuts that were difficult, or impossible, to do with carving tools. I have been considering doing more with them. Yesterday I wanted to try one of the projects from Lora Irish’s book. How do I get it from the book to my wood? I would have liked to have used the method mentioned recently about using a scanner and printer. Didn’t have the “overhead projector” material. Carbon paper? Didn’t have any of that either. Diana finally got tired of me rummaging through all of our office materials. Well, OK, she really got tired of me grumbling. Anyway, she suggested I use the “stuff” that she uses on her sewing projects to put patterns onto the cloth. “Suit yourself!”, she commented about my many reasons why “sewing stuff” won’t work on wood. Now, honor demanded that I stand up to the challenge. What is that “stuff” anyway? Comes in different colors. Use it like carbon paper. Doesn’t smear. Gonna sneak into the fabric store and get me a supply. Try it you will like it! |

| | Re: What is that stuff? Paul i know the stuff your talking about its different colors for contrast on different color materials i would call it tracing paper,
its like tissue with wax and chalk on one side. usually winds up in the bottom of a drawer crumpled up and wasted,
i think you could do the came with a crayon on the back of the pattern just color it dark,,,
iv used a pencil and colored the back of a pattern just transfer the outlining of a new carving to a block of wood but it makes a mess if you keep the patterns on file. |

| | Re: What is that stuff? Tomp, you are right about the name. i just got back from town and purchased my own packet while in there. Diana's had been used so much that it had holes all over it, she uses some kind of wheel with sharp spikes to transfer the stuff.
But, what I got is "wax-free". It says it can be used to transfer lines to fabric, paper, wood, glass or metal. Transfer lines can be inked or painted over and marks can be removed by using fabric eraser (whatever that is) or damp cloth.
I used it the other day to transfer Lora's mallard (Great Book of Woodburning) onto a square of China birch plywood. No problem with the lines smearing and they did erase easily.
I still want to try the scanner/copier method. But, did run into one problem there. I found that it would have been better had I not transferred every line from Lora's pattern onto my project. But, I will go into that when I do a post about my project.

Cost is much more than carbon paper.

i think i read some where its not good to breathe some of that transfer vapor as you burn, keep a fan pulling vapors away from ya just-in-case and don't burn in a closet... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
