Default Storage rack for gouges

Anyone care to share how they store their gouges? I'm particularly interested in storage racks or some other way that they can all be visible on a work bench. Pictures are a plus!
Thanks! Thank You

Dianna

Hi Dianna,

Click on this link and about half way down you'll see what I made to store my tools on my carving bench. Or you could just click on my picturetrail site below and I also have some pictures of how I store my tools. Plus, just browse the thread to see how other people store their tools. Good luck.

Show me your tool rack(s)

I keep my tools in rolls, easy to pick up, very portable and takes up little room. I have drawn up some plans to make a box to hold all my tools, just haven't found the time to make it yet.

Here's mine.

It's actually two cases that mount to the wall behind my bench. One has two doors that fold out and one that has just a single door. The hinges lift off to separate the sections for mounting. They hold nearly 90 gouges, all told.

Earlier this summer they proved their worth. When our basement flooded all I had to do was unmount the cases from the wall, close them up and take them to a dry part of the house until we got the water all taken care of.

Weeks later, when we were able to reclaim & refinish the basement, I just brought them back down, hung them back up and went right back to carving!

Russ,

Very nice! I am green. If I had a workshop like that, my family would never see me.

Bart,

Do you remember who made the rack you bought in Charlotte?

I have a pouch for mine, which is great when you are traveling, or going to a club or class, but I would love to have a rack for use at home.

I look with envy on the systems used to organize carving tools and think, "I could make one of those!" Then reality rears its head and I thinK, "Yeah, but I wouldn't use it!"

I keep my tools, when not in use, in the cheap plastic boxes made for fishing lures. While carving, I have even tried to put them back when I change for another. Ain't gonna happen for very long. Shortly, unconciously, I lay it down, quickly reach for the one I want......and it continues. Finally, I look at the jumble of tools on my work table, put them back in their designated locations......and start all over again.

Seems to me that there are those who can live with and remain organized and then there is me. Maybe its because I am getting old and can't concentrate on a lot of things at once; but, that does not explain my long history of controlled (barely sometimes) chaos.

So, I love the look of the racks of tools but am resigned to, even contented with, disorganization.

I think you have to go with whatever works for you. Now a rack system would work for me at home. I like to be able to visualize what I need and then quickly scan my tools to grab what I need and then put it back when I am done with it. I live in a very organized way (military spouse), though to look at my computer desk right now, you would call me a liar.

The only thing in its place is the dust....
