I beleive this was in a W/F carving mag. To make green moss for old looking trees get 2 packets of fabric dye from a doller store 1 dark green & 1 yellow thay can be mixed to get the desired green you like.Next get a piece or several pieces of old Basswood and soak the Basswood in the mixed dye leave until well soaked in. take out of dye and let dry ,next take your kutsol burr or a course file and shred off the coloured wood . you can make lots and store it in a plastic bag .A small amount of clear glue will hold it in place in the areas you want. I used this method and it looks great. I guess its not spagnum butt this might work.
Gordo.

Just go to a hobby shop that sells model trains and buy the crushed foam or lichen and cover it with the crushed foam using Mod Podge acrylic medium. It comes is all colors.
