If you can't find your tripod, or don't want to buy one, be creative and make one up real easy. Disclamer: this is not my idea, but I can't remember what magazine I read it in, but I do remember the dentist's office, LOL, anyway, felt it needed to be shared with the board because many make reference to not having a small tripod when shooting pictures of their carvings. Also when shooting the pictures, use your cameras 10 second delay feature to take the picture after you've focused it in. My camera tripod mount is on the end, but many have center hole tripod mounts which makes it looks not as funny when complete, but one must deal with the cards dealt. Go get a same size machine screw (to fit the tripod hole) from your coffee can in the work shop or from one of the big stores, a couple of flat washers and two nuts. Drill same size hole in the top of your empty water bottle cap and make your connection to the cameras tripod hole. Do a test fit first, make any adjustments, ( I sandwiched a washer on top of and inside of the cap to make a stronger base). If all fits OK, add weight to the water bottle for a stronger support base. Use what you want or have on hand, such as sand, fish bowl stone, I simply used plain old water, (bye the way, water equals out to 8 lbs./ gal, so this 16.9oz bottle when full converts to about 1 lb weight). Use what ever type bottles you may have around, pop, milk, spices, canning bottle...really any jar/bottle with an attachable lid will work. Have fun and enjoy. Bill

Bill, Your article in this issue of WOODCARVING Illustrated was a great spin on a Santa carving. It will be on my list of next projects. I went to your website and checked out the other photos of your works. The golfer with the ball in the carving, I've seen photos before and wondered how you put the ball in. Now that I found a way to ask..........How do you get the ball in???? LOL My guess is drill a hole in the bottom and plug the hole after putting the ball in. Again Great Job!!! on the article. |

I have also heard about using a small bean bag to position/level a camera. The bean bag on a few books (or whatever) show work too.
