Mmmm - nice rack Brian. I have been debating the form I want to try to make mine in. For now I am going to stick with tool rolls carried around in my basic plastic toolbox. But I like these standing racks that take up less surface area when layed out.

Thanks for the pics.

Chuckt,I think your point of taking up less room is spot on here. I have a three piece stanley tool box that I use.Can take a lot of tools, material, what have uou in it. The little bride bought it for us from selling her first cottonwood bark carving, so feel I need to use it.
Attending the Bishop's class last year, I seen 10 different configurations on boxes, buckets, some home made and sone store bought. I liked them all as well as the way the Bishop's tool carry were built. Maybe one of these days.

I use magnetic strips on the back of my bench to hold the gouges I'm working with. I have the strips offset from the back by about an inch so my fingers can easily grab them. Works fine for me.

Try a pad of 2" thick foam rubber, wrestling mat works fine. You can just poke the tools in were ever and whenever you want.

I was the one that started this thread some time ago and
I have finally gotten around to putting a rack together for myself.

I used the design revealed by Tom H, thank you very much.

It only holds gouges that I am using at any given moment...that is to say, I shouldn't be using more than the ten gouges/slots at any given moment!

I am also building a box similar in design the one shown by brianh. to hold and transport the rest of my gouges.
I'll post an image of that when it's done.

It is designed to hold 48 gouges...for the time being, more gouges than I own! ;-)

in post #15 on this thread i put up what i deemed at the time a good cheap rack,

ok ill say it it has some drawbacks, TOOL IDENTIFICATION for one thing.

while im carving i know which tool i need but not being able to see the cutting end profile leaves me to hunt and pick out the one i want which is always the last one in the tray, or i find it elsewhere that causes a delay in what i was thinking to do on the carving so its just wasted time....

ok this thread has addressed one issue, we all like out racks for different reasons,

now we need a how to identify your tool in a rack of your choice,

Now im not a big fan of letting a cutting edge rest on any surface, i spend too much time working on them for them to be dulled by a forgotten screw that happens to fall in the rack ... or something similar

SO heres the : ?
is it easier to let the tool hang by the handle and have the profile and cutting edge be visible so you can see it at a glimpse.

or is there a way to put all the information on the end of a knob handle of a palm chisel..? that is neat enough to read,

admittedly i have used under ware marker to mark my new stubai palm tools with the number profile, and the MM measure same as the tag they came with,
all my other old tools i have used my wood burner and burnt in the profile shape and mm size, but not the # of the profile, as im still learning them.

see attachment,,

kinda wondering if anybody was able to print up some stickers and stick them on there tools and seal them with a coating or something, before i tried it.

Thomp,

I have to be able to see the profile of the tool.

Though it might not be apparent in the image I just posted I can see virtually the entire length of each gouge, and hence the cutting profile of the tool.

The only exceptions to that in this rack are my skew and straight chisels, so I always put those, if I'm using them, in the first couple of slots and the right, as in this image.

For my palm tools they hang from a carousel/turntable set up, again, where I can see the entire tool profile. It's a homemade version of the "Carving in a Bucket" thing available commercially.

You can sort of see my palm tool rack on the left side of the attached image.
