| | Shop Dust System I've seen a couple of posts on shop dust systems lately so I thought I would show mine.
I built this quite a few years ago from plans in a Shop Notes magazine. I looked on their website but couldn't locate the plans. Too bad, it was a real neat project.
It's built out of a sheet of 3/4" plywood, some aluminum ducting, duct tape, some screws, silicone sealant, and a commercial blower. The blower cost me about $150. I put it together in just a couple of days and boy does it work. The vortex cone does a terrific job of putting everything in the barrel. I have a 4" pvc pipe run of about 35 feet with five drops to major tools. I made my own gates out of galvanized metal. I can have up to three chutes open at the same time.
Nothing fancy but it works! |

Thanks

| | Re: Shop Dust System Lynn I built a system something like yours several years ago and used the blower fan out of an old furnace worked great and was cheap. I knew a heating and air supplier and he just gave me the fan. I also put an adjustable gate on mine to control air flow.

| | Re: Shop Dust System That sounds interesting! Any chance of a photo?
The secret to a good dust system is the vortex created by the cone. Look outside any cabinet or carpentry shop and you'll no doubt see a larger version of the one in the photo. That spinning vortex channels all the dust down into the barrell and only dust free air is blown out the blower at the top. Most small shop systems that I've seen are just glorified vaccum cleaners blowing the residue into a cloth bag which gets clogged up pretty quick. |

| | Re: Shop Dust System Okay......Quite a few years ago I bought a Reliant NN620 floor model dust collection system. I've tried to track it down on the net but Trend-Lines, the company I bought it from, was absorbed by Woodworker Supply and they no longer carry it. I did see a Delta unit that was similar..3/4 hp model. Maybe someone out there who subscribes to Shop Notes can query them about the plans. I tossed all my mags years ago. |

| | Re: Shop Dust System Here is an interesting site on dust collecting equipment and the prices seem very reasonable. http://www.clearvuecyclones.com/Order_Page.htm
but I don't see the can or container on any of them, and it must be a special can, otherwise it wouldn't be sealed and the dust come right back out? not sure about all I know about this? |

| | Re: Shop Dust System Lynn, your dust collection systen looks neat. Sounds like you are close to a dust free shop. Outstanding. My old 20 inch box fan with furnace/air conditioning filters on both sides works ok but not a dust free shop to say the least but, the dust particules are cut way down. Been thinking on adding another filter in front and back But again, that will not make it a dust free work area either. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
