Ron: have you got a brand and a source for the proportional scale? Opus Framing is the biggest art supply place in Canada = only a 2D pantograph and I have one of those. The maquette Raven was a sort of free-hand thing, I carved until I got something I liked. No drawings (and I file every drawing/sketch that I do). |

| I do the same thing. If I'm not sure about where I'm going with a sculpture, I make a maquette from plasticine and measure and scale off of it using the proportional scale. I draw a rough sketch pattern and record all of the dimensions onto the rough sketch. I then use those dimensions to transfer onto the block or log. I cut away the waste leaving a margin for error. Once I get the the rough shape blocked out it starts to take shape and I start shaving by sculpting off the edge. Visualizing the rough shape of the sculpture in the proper proportion from a solid block is the most challenging part for me. Sorry to use a cliche' but after that, I just take away what doesn't look look like what I'm trying to sculpt.

Thanks Ron. What a cool tool. I'll buy 2 of them. That way, #1 will never get lost. mobjack = thanks, I've been mulling that over. Sort of 1/2 of a 2D pantograph. I think I'll try to fake it with some 1" x 24" rosewood strips (I have enough of that stuff to stir paint). If that works OK, I'll make a hard version with 3/4" x 1/8" aluminum strap |

I take picture and resize them to the size that I want when I print the pictures.

I think that what I am going to wind up doing is cutting the 2 beak blanks and trying to carve two similar beaks.
