Over the summer, I sell landscape plants at the farmers market. I bring a carving to sand while I'm there. I was sanding and a man walked up and saw me using sand paper. He said to use drywall screens to sand with. So I told my carpenter husband and he supplied me with one. Takes the roughness out quicker than course sandpaper. They last a long time and don't hold as much dust. I start off with the medium which is 100 grit and then go to fine which is 180. After that its 220 sandpaper and up.I cut a screen up to whatever size I need. You can roll or fold them up to get into crevices.Thought I would share this good idea!

Interesting! I've used them on drywall repairs but I never tried any on a carving. I know I have a bunch in the basement, I'll have to see what grit they are.

Sharon thanks for the tip I wonder if you were to cut them and make them into a mop type head for a sanding mandrel if it would work as well. I will give that a try today and get back to you as to how is works out. This is what I love about this board sharing of ideas. Great tip Sharon nice of you to share it with us Colin

Colin, that sounds like it might work. I would like to see how it turns out and how you would mount in on a mandrel. You got my mind going now! Just thought of something but don't know how to express it in words, I will just have to try it and see if it works. I'll check back later to see what we both come up with!

I love taking a carving to the farmers market to work on, because somebody always notices that I'm working on something. I've met a few other carvers that way and have also got some great advice, such as this sanding tip. Some people have always wanted to carve and I try to encourage them to. It's really neat when the kids there take an interest in carving. Plus I didn't sell hardly any thing this season, so it sure helps pass the time! LOL
