When practicing carving faces I use a 2x2x12" piece of wood. After using all sides or corners, I use my plainer to plain down each side and usually come out with a 1x1x12" piece. Sometimes it is a little bigger or a little smaller depending on how deep the cuts are.. Then I start practicing carving faces some more. If you have a thick enough blade on your Band saw, you can cut the carved sides off also or sand them down with sander. I have tried all three but like the plainer technique the best.
