I consider myself to be a pretty safe carver. I am always aware of the position of my fingers and the direction of my cuts and I am very deliberate and careful. I guess even being as careful as we can be the unfortunate accident will eventually happen to us all and we will get cut from time to time. I was carving Saturday night and the grain in the wood changed on me as I made a cut and the piece of wood actually broke (split) in two on me. When it did the knife slid right on with it and caught my finger. Fortunately for me I always wear a glove and thumbguard. As you can see from the pictures the glove took a beating and although I got a nasty cut if it had not been for the glove I am sure I would have cut half my finger off. Get a good glove and wear it always... it just might save you too! It's Tuesday night now and the cut seems to be healing up nicely. Probably should have had a stitch or two in it but just cleaned it up and superglued it to stop the bleeding. Be safe all... Fred

Fred, You are doing a lot of people, carvers, a very big favor by sharing this near tragedy. We can try to be and are careful but we tend to forget about those unexpected events. Thanks Al

Wow! It is indeed a good thing you had that glove on. I got a glove from the Carving Glove Guy and it is a combination of leather and kevlar. It has saved me on a few occasions. Thanks for the reminder to be safe, Fred.

Wow, Fred, Close call, Kind of shows how you can cut right through a Kevlar glove. Good thing they invented super glue. Helps you get back to carving quicker. Glad you are ok, Tom |

Hi Fred, That glove cut looks painful !! I too wished to pick up a glove and the local Sears or Canadian Tire (cannot remember which) had similar gloves as yours in the pic, but the guy said they were work gloves with polyblah blah coating for grip. I did ask if they were made from Kevlar, but I lost him at that point! They have cheap gloves with rubber studs as grip, which resemble the Kevlar gloves sold by Carving stores. I will probably order from a specialized carving store. Debating between the kevlar and the stainless steel fiber one. To those that have the steel glove, is it too rigid and awkward? Advice appreciated folks, Cheers Ron |

Fred, glad It isn't worse. I got a real chill looking at your first picture. Appears that you are holding your fingertip in your palm. Bill K.. |
