Default Phi******"The Golden Ratio"

Quite a ways back there was some discussion on the best or at least one of the more pleasing display shapes. It may have been in regards to framing or designing relief boards.

Anyway, I just got the new Lee Valley catalog and in it are several steel rules that incorporate the "Phi" concept. I have no idea how or where this was developed, but has been around for centuries as a standard for developing pleasing architecture, furniture and art designs.

It is simply a 1.6~1 ratio of height to width or width to height.

Just thought I'd pass that along while it's still fresh in my memory and in case anyone was still wondering about it.

Here's an interesting link.....http://goldennumber.net/neophite.htm

Default Re: Phi******"The Golden Ratio"

Thanks for reminding us Al. One does not need to understand or even know about this "golden ratio" to its affects. A quick look at cheap furnature in a catalog will illustrate my point. When something looks a little "off" but you cannot quite put your finger on why; it most likely is that this ratio rule was not ignored. Just last week on the Discovery Channel or one of those educational PBS channels was an hour on Greek Architectual design. Part of the program focused on this design rule. There are many applications in carving too.
