Default Panavise on a roller stand?

Has anyone tried mounting a panavise in place of the roller on a roller stand? Like this one http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95621

Thanks

I'm sure you could. I tend to think you wouldn't have much mass to the thing to keep it from moving around if you planned doing any serious carving or mallet work on it.I have several of those stands and they aren't particularly stable. For very light duty it just might work. The best stands in my opinion seem to be the heavier the better to keep the work from squirreling around.

I have had to do some mallet work. Currently I have the vise on a bench hook on my kitchen table. I leave it set up most of the time. I'm looking for something that is standalone that I can put away if needed. I liked silver&dust's carving stand. Would just like to be able to put it away.

Panavise has different bases, you could get a clamp on base and put it on a table or bench and remove it when you are through, or you could make a fold down bench on the wall with the vise....lots of ways to skin a cat...I have two roller stands like that, and although they do have some weight to them, I think when you got them extended to a workable height, they might be a bit unstable, especially if you were using chisels...just using a knife, they would probably work fine.....imho

Hi Ho I think is right. It's the workable height issue.Too much leverage occurs.Slivers stand works because it's got a 'couple hundred pounds of solid marble on the base,,it's a solid steel pedestal and the base also includes his own weight when he uses it.If you incorporate a plywood base for example to fix the stands to rigidly ( and could be broken down) and your own weight as you sit or stand on this base might help. This way as you pound on a carving if it moves it'll have to take you with it.Otherwise the stand will just keep sliding around the floor and wanting to topple over. That just might help.

Well I checked out one of these stands at lowes and even standing on it I thought it was too flexible. Another thought I had was to have something like the pedestal base for a table. A 6x6 post is fairly heavy and if it has feet like a pedestal table that may work. It wouldn't be height adjustable but it could be nice enough to leave out if I carved it. I could cover up the vise with a cap and put a plant or a completed carving on it. There is a local place that has recycled barn beams and maybe I can get something bigger than 6x6.
Crazy idea? Any thoughts?

I saw one somewhere that was a 4x4 from floor to rafters....(ceiling joists if you prefer) and a carvers arm on it....very strong.....thought of that myself, except I don't have a spot to permanently mount something like that...but you have to admit......it would be solid!

Yeah,,kinda thought the roller stand would be a bit too flexible,,worth a look though.Same for the table base,,now that might fill the bill.Rigidity and weight seem to go hand in hand with carving stands. My ideal would probably be a poured concrete block with a wooden top. Not very portable,,but it wouldn't budge no matter what I did on it. I've been using a made up bench that I parked a huge poured plaster capital on the base of it. It has no plans to move anywhere soon,,but that wouldn't fit your needs.Ahh the search continues.
