it arrived yesterday, a 12x24 inside dim. portable building one 4" door centered in side and no windows. What was i thinking security,?, but if i ran a bakery i wouldn't need a oven "tell ya what!", wow its a hot house, just getting into dog days here in central, la. its good-n-hot if yer wondering.. in the hundreds but will be nice this winter. plans for ventilation, shelves cabinets, lighting and work benches completely down the back wall, is in the works im sure ill include some of the racks and organizational methods posted here on wci, as im not too much of a planner, my original idea was to make a 16x16 pole barn for wood working and material storage, but it quickly became all wood and metal material storage and im planning not to make that mistake on this shop, (famous last words i know!)large tools i have are a small contractors table saw, radial saw, on stands, and delta chop saw all 10", a bench drill press, router table and 2 scroll saws and several 1" belt sanders, portable hand tools to fill a pickup truck im thinking a wall of drawers & shelves to roost these items or for most of them as well as pegboards for most used, and plans for a bandsaw this years xmas to me present?. thinking of dust removal along with ventilation system, lower walls will be covered with 1/4" luaun because i have it on hand and electrical will be ran at bench top height plug ins about every 2 feet along the wall of benches, and a row of lights down the middle, thinking the machines will have to be wheeled to make best use of them in the limited space and a curtin to contain sawdust to limited areas its really a compact shop for what i need to use it for carving/cabinets and tool making, so dedicated areas might be a thing that wont happen unless i can really organize it well.. thanks for reading or suggesting your experiance in these matters..

| I quess my first thought, for living in Kansas, would be the ventilation temperature system. I have a Air Conditioner and heater but I would also like a large attic fan for those days when the door would be open. To provide consolidation and portability two of the best things I've done is first cover the table saw with a removable sheet of 3/8 plywood edged underneath with 1 x 2's so I can use it as a work surface. It's easy to remove for saw use and I need the work surface. Second, I bought from Harbor Frt., one of those metal carts on wheels. Size approx 28 x 40 inches. Covered the top with plywood so that I could mount several tools, in my case a Chop Saw, 1 x 42 Belt Sander with wheel and a 3' Belt Sander. The bottom is used for scrap wood storage. With them altogether it's easy to hook up individually, as I need it, a vacuum hose to the tool I'm using and of course it's portable. Gosh Thomp, the list goes on and on. From the threads I've read of yours you certainly don't need any ideas. You are full of them. I'll bet your looking forward to having a new shop to play in. |

congrats on the new shop thomp!! yea be careful before you know it the lawn mower has to go in there then that old dresser then....... yada yada yada then no work space left.i got a 10x24 a couple of years ago so i no how it happens. mine has a pitch roof so i took 2x6's ran them across the width of the shop from stud to stud at the top of the wall's,then laid wafer board on top of that and it makes a nice storage loft to put some of that useless junk out of the way.i did mine on both sides of the door so the middle is open and you have access to both loft sections from the center of the shop.i sprayed mine real good for pesky critters and now wished i had taken my fathers advice and done some type of floor covering be it vinyl or what ever it sure would make clean up easier. cograts again enjoy!!

The first thing I would do it to figure out just where I plan on setting to do most of my carving, preferably on the north side of the building. Then I'd cut a BIG opening for a nice window, hopefully with a view of the road or sidewalk so I can watch the world go by while I whittle. Then I'd go buy me a nice airconditioner. To keep the place clean I would add on a little room outside to house my dust collection system, one of those that will set on top of a big trash can that I wouldn't have to empty so often. Then, before I start moving in all that stuff I never used in the old place, I'd have a Garage Sale and get rid of it.

If its a metal building, you need some insulation in the ceiling, the metal will drip water from condensation when the humidity is just right....not a good thing for tools! 4" door in side....yep I would call that security, take a skinny feller to git in there!

| Thomp, I am in the process of turning one of those portable buildings (14x28) into a carving shop. Mine is wood with shingle top. I ordered 4 sets of double doors (1 on north, 1 on south, 2 along the east wall) I then purchased some gate hooks to hold the doors open. My brother and I then installed one of the motel type airconditioner/heaters (they are much more efficient than window units). The building company wanted too much to put in windows so I put two in myself (one on north wall and one on east wall). I also have an old, big, double “squirrel cage” blower from an airconditioner to use as a fan to move air through the place. Kept it portable to move around the building according to need. This really cuts down on the need for the airconditioner. I used R13 insulation (w/vapor barrier built in) on the ceiling and exterior walls. Got me a breaker box (6) for the building. I ran one circuit down the east wall, one for lights and ceiling outlets, two for the 220 A/C, and 2 along the west wall (my main work area since it is up against the treeline of the woods). Every other plug (couple of feet apart) along this wall is on a separate circuit (used white and brown covers to designate the circuits). No problem of overload here. I also put two “drop lines” from the ceiling in along the middle of the building (used hooks on the sidewalls to keep them out of the way when not in use). I intend to build bookshelves along the south wall and top of the west wall. I am covering the walls and ceiling with ¼ inch plywood. That is as far as the planning has gone. Almost ready to start painting. Keep me posted on your building as far as the setup is concerned. |

Sorry this aint a McPost its a whapper.. get comfortable.. WOW what a sturr i caused,
the new building is round topped or domed, i say round but the rafters are made of taper cut 2'x8"'s tapered from middle 8 ft each side down to 2 inch at the junction where they meet the walls, we have no snow accumulation in this area of the country so thats plenty of slope. and no overhead storage. 2x4 wall construction The note on my desk from the wife says the man will be here Monday to move the building!, that was the First mistake! in my effort to keep the yard space best used, and keeping the shop close to the house for electrical supply, were my thoughts, well i didn't plan well enough, I put it in a 24 foot unfinished fair weather driveway or space between the house and fence is where i set the shop. leaving only 8 foot of space between the shop and house, with a passage of a push lawnmower between it and the fence,I guess best placement hardly leaves a place to bring materials in 8 foot length, and near impossible to get in a 16 footer 1x6 for bench fronts unless i bend it like homer says DAAH! theres more reason to move it than to keep it where it is presently. Thor pics are posted at this link... http://picasaweb.google.com/thomp51La/Shouse Air conditioner is next years birthday Christmas and fathers day, hey im limited since i retired..this thing set me back 10 years on the honey doo! list. maybe i can sell some carvings and razor knives, if i don't have to burn them to keep warm this winter. and the wife is car shopping. so that means a lean cool winter. Xsailer. a 4 foot attic fan is fixing to be put into a stand with wheels, that will have to suffice this year for dust control and ventilation. but a outside dust elimination system in the plan for near future.. consolidation of tools, i hate to build stuff on my table saw top, i did at first when i bought the 10" radial arm saw but soon found it caused the table to get out of whack, with the arm, especially when i use a hammer, but the idea of a cover is a good one, it keeps you from having to peel off the glue droplets before you use it every time, I plan to do the work stations like Norm Abraham's new Yankee workshop, did in his tv series when he built his shop, he cut a hole in the bench top, then matched the hole with size and cutting 3/4" plywood bases a foot square for all his semi portable - occasional used tools attached the tool, (the base would drop in the bench hole, that was foritified from underneath with a 10x10 frame, the bases wouldn't hender the tool from being set anywhere in the shop in case more than one was needed at a time. router mat could be used to make the tool not slide around, like biscuit jointer, belt sanders and bench top drill press, he used the under cabinet for storage of these tools when not in use, the base area of cut out bench was fortified with solid wood, and the piece he removed was dropped in to cover the hole if he didn't have a tool mounted, A real nice clutter remover method. bench was also used for chop saw run over. i have one of those carts that gets worked to death. and needs an overhaul at the welding shop..its wobbly and getting limber.DADDIO. the floor may get painted but thats about it, the over head isn't allowing much storage space, more than fishing poles, a ceiling fan without a light wouldn't be a bother for me and the wemen as im 5-9" but it would play heck with my son and son in laws hair doo. maybe a over roof structure later would provide, shade and, for some stick lumber later, Lynn O. Doughty. Yep my thoughts on a window exactly, the windows offered were cheap flimsy made little peep holes that would allow a candle to be blown out during a windstorm even when locked. and i thought them to be put in after it settled in, to keep them from binding up. Although wedged in where i got it there wont be much view besides the back of the state barn but i love to watch construction equipment work so thats enjoyable view to me. i made a crescent moon on door outhouse few years ago to store my rakes and such in, just as a conversation piece, since the tools are scattered between here and my son in laws 2 doors down, it will work for the dust collector.Lynn the west end was nestled under a fair sized big leaved catopla (fish worm) tree and that was my planned place for carving maybe a little cooler in the shade thoughts to pull close curtain so as not to have to cool/heat the entire dead air space, as for heat i got an old Ashley wood stove great to make cowboy coffee on.. but metal fireproofing is planned to cover walls ceiling and floor around it. collected junk: unfortunately what i need to get rid of is other mans trash, collected metal materials ect. and the dump charges $75.00 a load.. besides id be ashame to put out the stuff and ask somebody to pay me for it.. maybe if i left on the neighbors doorstep and run...Hi_Ho_Sliver the roof has some foam insulation but i don't think its more than a 1/4" thick but it dose afford some heat reducing quality, im going to put in roll insulation in the walls, north first, I thought of the total cavity fill icene spray in stuff, but at $600.00 for the 2 bottles needed its out of reach. hadn't noticed any condensation yet but anythings better than the pole barn with a dirt floor where i had em for years... yep lots of rust rubbing off maintenance has been going on. Paul_Guraedy Paul because its 12x24 foot and i can reach the ceiling flat footed thats the biggest heat problem (Already thought of a church steeple or power vent ,) maybe after its moved ill build a overhead shelter and privillian out front, for a patio. along the length of the roof i thought of installing several 110vt plugs in for lights the ceiling and making a swing arm for compressor air line and a electrical outlet hanging, from it. lights can be recessedthe north wall is planned for all workbench with a 4x4 tool troff in front, cabinets above and underneath for tools & junk drawers as i get better practiced in there construction, the electrical every 2 feet on that wall and 4 outlets on the other long wall. plus the 220 on each end.. that covers the posts so far, nap time

Well m y friend, looks like you are on your way with a shop. No suggestion here, I reorg and reorg and still not satisfied with my little place. Big equipment is in the garage. Band saws, table saw, two scroll saws, sanders, drill press, etc. Now the little bride says she is out of room so, she has taken over part of the garage for storing "HER" stuff. Now this lady has taken over one bedroom and coverted it in to a craft/scrapbooking room. No bed. She has taken part of the another bedroom which was partly a 'puter room, gave the king size bed to my son and daughterinlaw and now has a twin size bed for her mother when she comes to visited and asked if I needed all of that space for carving. Hmmm a 8 foot by 8 foot on the enclosed back porch. Now the GKids toy box in there now andout of the house. Big toy box at that. Carpor can barely get a vehicle in. Not my pickup but her's and wanting to put in a two car carport and enclosed the other one so "she can store more stuff. Get ready my friend, She's looking at your shop now,,,,,,,for storage. "Oh Woe is Me" LOL Maybe she is planning on getting rid of me and take over everything. That's wad I'm a think'n. Congratulation on the new shop.

Sounds like all you need now is a cot so that when you end up in the dog house you'll have a place to rack out at!
