Here is a clamp I came up with yesterday and had a friend help me with.
I first took one of my multi position vise's and a peice of baltic birch plywood. I mounted the vise sleeve to the plywood with 1/4x 20 threaded inserts and 3/4 x 1/4 machine bolts.
We then cut two 1/4 slots 3" from each end. We cut three peices of hardwood for cleats. On the very bottom edge we mounted one of the cleats permanently with screws and glue. The other two we marked and drilled 1/4 holes for the 2" carrage bolts we used. The only changes I made was to replace wing nuts on the bottom with the black plastic knobs you can get at Harbor freight or woodcraft.
This vise here is 18" tall and 24"wide. I plan on making different sizes for different needs. As you can see It will hold for doing releif or caricature. I did also line the edges of the cleats with sandpaper for gripping the peice of wood. So far it works great. Its nice to be able to turn and posistion the work so you are comfortable.

Ron,
That's a great idea for a clamping system! You could even have other sets of interchangable adjustable cleats for different projects. I like it!
