Here's a link to pictures of my portable carving table: http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumList?u=4055528 It's in Album number 19, Portable Desk.

The desk is just big enough to fit across the arms of my recliner, when not using it there I keep it on the table in my carving room. There are hand holes in each side for carrying it, they are sort of hard to see in the pictures, the one on the left is where the light cord is strung through.

The skirt part keeps the wood chips pretty much off of me when setting down, I just flip it over me when I'm carving, flip it back over the carving table when I get up. The back and side 'walls' keep chips from flying everywhere. Works quite well!

The pictures are old, I've removed the clips holding the rasps and continued the black elastic the entire way across the back of it to hold things. The light stays on it all the time, I just plug it into an extension cord when setting in my recliner, that way I can get up without ripping it off the table! Deborah

My boots, sometimes my socks. I tried carving directly over the kitty box, but the darn cat kept wanting to go...

Here is my version of the WCI lapboard. As you can see, I made a modification to hold the cover of a CD case. I use a small paintbrush to brush the chips into the container for easy removal. If I were to do it again, I would probably move the hole for the chip bucket to the center of the board.

One caution in making the belly band. I remember that one of the measurements was bad, but I can't remember which one. I found it by cutting the pieces out of paper and laying them out on the table before commiting to wood.

I used a piece of white pine for the main board (actually two pieces dowelled and glued). The rails and belly band were done from some old firring strips I had laying around.

I have a lap carving table I have made 5 years ago.But when I'm carving ,I hold the piece close to my chest. So I have a piece of vinyl nailed on the curved edge that I then lay up on my chest .And all the chips end up in the tray instead of your lap.

I use my lap board a lot lately and I see the benefit of the chip hole, but would be afraid of tools slipping down into it. I use an BBQ apron while using the lapboard, and that catches a lot of the chips too, very easy to bunch it up and collect them for the trash can.

Tucson,
What did you use to catch chips? Looks like something that has tabs on it?
