Good Job there Gord
But one thing, those tri pods are suppose to be for photography, not carving
Keep up the good work and enjoy the south however it hasn't been to bad here

Great idea. I just kicked an old heavy-duty camera tripod around in my shop the other day. Found it at the dump. Guess I just found a use for it. Is it safe to assume we have your permission to make our own interpretation of your design?

Default Carefull Though!

Dont mean to scare you, but all tripods/ballheads/panheads have a maximum weight limitation (the total amount of camera, lens weight) they can carry with rock stability.

Check the model and find out how much weight pressure can you exert on it before it moves.

The idea is neat though, especially if you have a pro grade tripod head.Should work for small light softwood carvings.

Cheers Ron

Hi Folks,

Well it's snowing pretty good here in the foothills of S Carolina. About 4 inches and still falling. I just finished my rendition of the camera tri-pod work positioner. I'll have to get a couple of pictures in the next day or so. I made one base out of a piece of 1/2" plywood about 2 1/2" inches square. I found a T-nut that fitted the threads of the mounting screw on the tri-pod. A couple of wood screws up through the bottom of my chunk of wood and "voila"...Complete 360 degree radius and about 270 degree front to back. I also made a plywood base for my stick carving base. I'm also thinking of making an easel base for it too. Right now I've got a piece of Holly mounted on the smaller base. I tried it out with a couple of gouges and it seems to work fine except when you have it in the vertical position and try to cut up from the bottom. I've found the best thing is to lay it down to the horizontal and tilt it slightly. Then you can pretty much do what you want. I just knew there was a reason I picked that tri-pod up from the dump. A scrap piece of plywood and about $ .50 worth of hardware made it all work.

Thank you for the idea Gord.

I don't know if I'd trust a camera tripod to support the heavy use of woodcraving.
