Default Letter opener

I am carving letter openers from bass wood, i have thought of using metal for blade or hard wood. If any one knows of a treatment or substance that would make basswood more durable i would appreciate any information.

Hi Larry, when I made a few letter openers I used CA glue along the edge so it will hold a nice sharp edge. I made mine out of walnut using a scroll saw.

Hi Larry
You might try using Wood Hardener you can get it at Lowes, Home Depot. It does a good job on punky wood, I don't know what it would do on good wood. Try it on a scrap piece and see what you think.
Hope this helps

Hi Larry,

You might want to watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQiuVDP33FM&NR=1 The wooden knife is heat hardened. I don't know if it will work with Basswood or just end up being kindling.

Black walnut works great for letter openers. I don't sharpen them until someone buys one.
