Default Lap dust collectors

Am looking for plans to put together a lap dust collector for power carving/sanding. What I am most interested in is the lap board with a small electric motor with a fan attached, and some sort of filter maybe. I know there has been plans out there for this or a similar setup. Thanks Tom H

Thanks Dave and Stacey. I have a hook up to my dust system in my shop. The lap board is attached to a work bench. Dave I couldn't find a dust collector on the site you gave me, but the source is just up the road from me. What I am really interested in is something very light weight but functional. Some I can take with me when I travel. Some of the carvers in our group tried to describe one made with a kitchen exhaust fan that was attached to a lap board and a bucket. I cannot believe those would be very efficient. I have several motors salvaged from scroll saws that with a fan could maybe work. Tom H

you could ask at beaverdamdecoys, even if they don't have them anymore they should be able to tell you where you can see them, as I remember, the were fairly small and light units.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I am too cheap to actually buy a lap dust collector. I still want to make my own. I probably have all the pieces and parts since I am such a pack rat. I have two furnace motors and squirrel cage fans that I could use, and follow the Fishcarvers plan. But I want a real quiet collector that is very portable and light in weight. I don't plan to use it in church, but maybe in the living room, motel room; you know what I mean. Tom H

Get a 5 gallon plastic bucket cut some holes about an inch from the bottom. But a few spacers in the bottom to hold the filter from covering the holes. Use the bottom of the bucket as a template to cut a couple of plywood rings. Cut up a furnace filter and get the media out of it cut th media a little larger than the ring. Staple or glue the media to the ring. Make a couple drop them in the bucket. Get a couple of muffin fans used in computers or electronic equipment. Mount them to a board or cut a piece the size of the top of the bucket with the fans blowing into the bucket. But a mesh screen over the fan openings to keep fingers, knives, and big chips out. Nice quiet little dust collector, cheap if you alredy have the parts. I have also seen this done with fans in the bottom of the bucket.
From one pack rat to another
