Question Installing and cutting out patterns

Why do some Figure Carvings & Caricature carvings have 2 patterns
and some have 3 & some have 4?

Is there a certain order to cutting the pattern?
If someone could explain or show some step by step pictures
on how to install patterns then cut them out on a bandsaw,
i`d appreciate it.

Thanks for any help
John

The current issue of Woodcarving Illustrated has an article about making a Grizzly Bear that shows some of the bandsawing. Often, if a carving is similar on both sides, the pattern only has the front and one side shown. If it's markedly diffent on each side (one arm is out, the other down, for example), both side patterns are shown. Sometimes, when the carving's head is turned, the pattern will show side view(s), front view, and a direct face-on view. Some even show a top view, when it helps define the carving.

One reason is thats the way a carver has trained him or herself how to set up patterns for your carvings. Also part the reason for more veiws is so whomever is using the pattern can have an idea on how the carving should look. I have also seen patterns with one view, which is the side view. Thats the way I learned and have also do my own patterns.

This is a good question and I'm sure you'll get a lot of good answers, these are just my reasons why.
