For those as frugal as I, I would like to share a tool I have been using for two years without incident (if you don't count the few times I've lost skin to my kudzal) It is the flex shaft grinder sold by grizzly tools. Model G9928 @49.95. The flexable shaft is very supple. The unit comes with a spare brush set and a foot control, an optional reciprocating handpiece and chisels are an additional 20 bucks. Sure beats 200 plus for a brand name unit. I like mine a lot, check it out at grizzly.com type in the model no using the search funtion.Thumbs Up arnie

Arnie, I am a grizzly tool fan and have their 14 " band saw, bench dual motor air filter. and several others. Plan on Stopping in at Grizzly when we go through Springfiel Mo next week and of course stopping and visit with Garon. That is one tool I don't have is their flex shaft grinder. Have two different models of the Dremal with flex shafts. May need to look at it whn I stop in. Thanks for the heads up my friend! Looks to be a nice one. www.grizzly.com or the grinder http://www.grizzly.com/products/g9928

i havent had that tool in my hands but it looks exactly the same as the one i bought from harbor freight, of course i lost the chuck key right off the bat, Fellers them chuck keys are hens teeth to find. attach your chuck key to a leather thong or something to the cord... my harbor freight tool has a central electric sticker on it, but i dont think theres any difference. mine was a special sale for $39.00 hand piece optional with 5 or 6 carving chissels fir $14- dont get me wrong im not knocking grizzly its just nice to know there is another place to get parts and accoresserys for them.

I'm happy to hear all this about the one from Harbor Tool. I was wondering how good it is in case my husband really does get into the carving. and wants to use my Foredom too much. We may need two to work at the same time.

nancy if you get another one from harbor freight let me know if the recipating carving handle fits from the fordom to the grizzly or harbor freight tool, they look to be compatable.. bad thing bout harbor freight they dont keep the same tools in stock nor do they offer many parts and aseessories for the tools they sell, like replacement flex cables or sheath, chuck keys ect.. i would love to change out the handle and chuck to one that was tooless and smaller like the dremel flex shaft handpiece... both the grizzli and harbor freight tools has the tool type chuck, it reduces the reach of the shaft on the bit or burr when reaching inside perferations or cowboy inseams at the knees

I have one from harbor frieght also but I have not used it yet so I didn't mention it. It looks exactly like the one from grizzly just a different label. You should be able to obtain a replacement chuck key from any large hardware or home depot etc. Just take the handpiece with you. There is a large woodcarving show close by next weekend and I plan to take the flexshaft with me to see iff the foredom hand piece will fit. Not because of the lack of reach, but the new foredom will hold a 1/4 inch shank. When I,m working in a tight place I use a micro detailer. I,ll update the post when I find out if the foredom or whatever brand they have will fit. If it does you will still only have 100 bucks in a pretty good grinder.arnie

Will the Grizzly accept 1/4" accessories such as cylindrical sanding tools ? The Dremel & Foredom only accept 3/16" max shaft diameter bits. There are many such sanding bits available which are very useful in carving and bandsaw box finishing...

I had a Professional Woodworker model which i bought on eBay (made in China like all of them). It worked fine for power carving and I used it in one of Roz Daisey's classes to do a Canada goose. The handpiece is "like" a Foredom #30 but NOT interchangable. The flex shaft broke when my Kutzall caught in my shirt on another project. It took me way too many emails to find a source for parts. The vendor on eBay did not even return emails. I asked about four or five others and finally found one. The flex shaft was $30 (yikes). I tried using a Foredom replacement shaft but if does not connect to the motor properly. I finally bought a Foredom after getting the PW to work. At least I can get parts from Foredom. If Grizzly will supply parts then go with them. I have some Grizzly tools and find them to be decent quality. I hope this helps.
