Default Holding small carvings

Here is a carving Tip. When doing small carvings, don't cut them to the finished length until you have all the carving finished. That way the knife wouldn't be as close to you're hand when you are carving.
My two cents worth!

Excellent suggestion, I have been carving small bears, 1" tall and less and this really helps. I'm down to about 1/4" dia, trying to go smaller but don't think it will happen

Thats a great idea. I've done similiar small carvings on walking stick length woods, then just saw them off with a base. Works pretty good in a stacked group like a totem pole too.
