Yesterday I did four glue ups, not my favorite thing to do, I hate how the pieces slip and slide while I'm trying to get the clamps on......but these ones were a breeze!! The solution was so simple I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner....so.....just in case there is anyone else out there as slow as me to think of it, I'll share it with you. The simple fix is...masking tape. I put the glue on the pieces and then, before clamping wound masking tape around the block, lengthwise and around, then I clamped the pieces. The result, no slipping!! A miracle!!! Or maybe the light at the end of a "DUHHHHHH!!!!" Callynne

Good tip. When I do glue ups I make the piece just a bit larger than I plan to carve and use drywall screws in each of the corners that are to be cut away when I bandsaw the roughout. I often put a large C clamp in the middle to make sure that the glue bonds tightly there as well but the drywall screws are usually enough. If you look you can find these things up to 3 inches long.

Deb, Lynn Doughty has a method of using strips of rubber to wrap around his carving while gluing up an add-on. It really keeps good pressure on the joint, and you can still adjust a little after the pressure is on. I took an old bicycle tube and cut it up lengthwise to get my strips. Good luck, Tom |

If your pieces fit together well you can do a 'rub joint', slide the pieces around a bit while pressing them together, you'll squeeze out some of the excess glue and they will stop moving. then you add the clamps.

Hi Deborah, Good tip. We've used that method in our shop for quite awhile for glue ups making furniture panels and legs. Thanks Gary |

Callynne... blue masking tape works good but I also have had great luck with rubber bands!

I'll agree with Tom on this one. Being an avid cyclist, I end up with quite a few old tubes. Rather than throwing them away, I hang them in my garage. It's amazing how often a good strong piece of rubber comes in handy.
