Looking for information or ideas on using 1/2" pipe insulation foam for sanding sleeves. Any ideas would be helpful. Regards, Michael |

Cut the paper so it fits in the sit and wraps around and into the slit again. Is that what you mean?

That stuff is urthane foam we use spray adhesive in the TRADES to attach it to ducts and valves.

The sander would be used with a 1/2" drum sander, I would like to use cloth backed sandpaper to wrap the foam. I have the idea to use these on decorative birds, I'm sure this would work for several different uses. I have tried using super glue with soso results. The sander works great, I have used a larger inside piece of foam mounted on a section of 1" pvc pipe 10" long. Using this by hand on a decorative decoy I'm working on, pleased with results. Regards, Michael |

It's a great idea, and there's already "soft sanders" or Marsh Sanders on the market and I love them. I think I have 4-5 different sizes and use them extensively, especially when power carving birds. I load them with Swiss cloth (fabric backed sandpaper) in different grits. Each one has a piece of brass tubing in the center to hold Swisscloth in place. The end is crimped enough that when it's turned slightly with a little "L" shaped tool, it holds firmly. To change paper remove the tubing, put in new Swisscloth, then re-insert the tubing. Donna_T

From the peanut gallery~ If I was going to make a foam-backed sanding pad, I'd look to the foam mouse pads. I have not idea if it would work, but that's what I'd try at the start of my experimenting... LMiller |

You might try rubber cement instead of super glue. I haven't used it on foam, but it bonds to all kinds of unusual surfaces well, and is inexpensive to boot.

All the carving supply catalogs carry these things and they are great. I use them extensively. Eventually the foam will wear out and I replace it with a cut off piece of thin mouse pad. I clean it off and cover it with yellow glue, wrap the foam on it and wrap that with rubber bands very tightly. Leave overnight and remove rubber bands. Works for me. Doug |
