Default Drawing Ovals

I am trying to find a way to draw ovals. I like to use them for carving bases. I have some patterns for smaller size ovals, that I use, but I need a larger one now, 6 inches by 12 inches. I know that you can put two nails in a board and use string as a guide for a pencil, but I don't know how to figure out the length of the string to get the wanted size of the oval, without moving the nails and changing the string length constantly.
I'm sure one of you has an easier way. Thanks in advance.
Dick

That video was outstanding! The third nail! I have a (paper) file just for tricks like that. Thanks.
