Default Down draft table

I was reading another thread about dust collection and thought I would post the down draft table that I built for my shop. It is approximately 2'x4' on the base. The top overhangs a bit all the way around for clamping. At first I had both sections on top with holes in it but decided to go with half solid and the other half with 1/2" holes on a 1" grid. I used an old AC air handler fan that someone gave me. It does a pretty fair job of keeping dust down for power carving or sanding. If you have the room for it I have found it to be pretty handy. Now if I can just get the pics to show up....

Wow! I'd love to sit there with an abalone shell and a Dremel.

Very well done and certianly quite practical. Do you do your 'power carving' over the 'open' side of the top? I noticed a foot switch is that how you turn it on, or do you have a switch for the handler? Thanks for sharing such a cool project with us.

@ Ron: the foot switch is for my Foredom tool. I just had it laying on top to keep it up out of the way. I have a regular light switch on the side with a electric outlet and that is where I plug the power strip into. I have a desk light that swivels out of the way that I clamp on the side for extra light also. Yes, I do power carve and sand over the side with the holes in it. The fan pulls the dust right down inside and it gets trapped against the air filter. It works pretty good for keeping dust down and seems to get 95% of it at least. It is kind of big but I have it on casters so I can move it around out of my way. If you have room for one, I highly recommend them. I have seen them made smaller also. One could probably build it about 2x2' on the base and do just as good. I like the extra room and as you can see I have my planer set up on the other end. I hook my dust collector hose up to it though.

It started out that way but I built the slot that the filters fit in a bit too narrow. Right now I just use one 20x20 ac filter in it and that seems to work pretty good. I pull it out occasionally and vacuum the dust off of it.

Nice unit! How did you deal with the DC/AC conversion on the car a/c blower?
