No, you have not missed anything.
Having worked in most of the trades I have never had a problem looking at a tool and knowing which one to use. If you need the number on the tool you must be carving by the numbers. LOL
Having collected tools for over 40 years I will tell you that as far as the resale market marking your tools lowers the value. People that collect are not willing to pay top dollar for marked tools. I can understand marking your tools if you are working in a shop so people do not pinch your tools or think they are theirs. Machines are very fussy. I marked my early tools then found I was wasting my time. I would never do it unless you like seing you name on things. LOL As for carving tools your eye can tell what sweep and size you need. I think if you can carve well your eye sees things well. If you see well then your eye matches the tool. I might be missing something but then again I do beat to a different drum. If marking your tools helps, go for it.

I use no marks, but I rarely see the handles. As I do alot of offsite carving most of my tools are kept in tool rolls. In the shop they hang over a rail which allows the roll to be open and the tips up where I can see them.

I don't waste a lot of time look for the perfect number , I look quickly to see size and shape of the tool by looking at the cutting edge.

HA! I mark mine! Only to make sure they don't walk off! You ever noticed how a nice sharp tool can just dissapear?! Not when the handles are bright red...thats fer sure!

I use both Flexcut and Pfiel palm tools. It would be great if Flexcut would mark their tools like Pfiel does on the tang of the metal. I've suggested that to Flexcut, but haven't heard anything from them.

Having the desire, and having a laser engraver in my shop, I did engrave them. I built a jig so it only takes a few seconds. Send them on up. I will fix the problem for you.

Nope, don't mark em. Just grab what I think I need. No need for me to mark them for security purposes what with me being a loner. No club, no carvin buddies (cept the dog).

I agree, Flex-cut should mark their tools. I go by eye sort of, but I find that I think in terms of sweep plus size when I think about what tool I need next. I have alot of Swissmade and have gotten used to reaching for them by marking.
