Default Chris Pye

If you have not already signed up for Chris Pye's newsletter, DO IT!

At the top left of this page.

There are very few carvers in Europe that I truly admire, but Chris is terrific.

His knowledge is incredible and his desire to share that knowledge is commendable.

I have the largest carving library of anyone I know, but there is only one book I keep in my desk at work to read over and over; it is written by Chris Pye.

If you visit his site and spend some time there, you will become a big fan also.

Only reason I subscribe to that English carving rag is because of Chris Pye. Total agreement on his knowledge. To bad I can't say that for the other contributers in that rag.

Chris Pye's book on Basic Carving is one of those things that got me to try other forms of carving, other than ships I mean. I'm glad to see his work coming to WCI too and have been using his site for ages. Some great instructional sections there.

My (Current) top choice is his Tools and Materials for Wood Carving Volume 1. The book used to be one large volume, but they broke it into two parts. Volume one is about hand tools, volume 2 is about wood, alternative carving tools. I keep it in my car to read while I wait for the guy I car pool with.

Actually it is two books in one; I have the complete book prior to being reprinted in two sections.

The subjects I enjoy most are in the top book on this list:

I'm really pleased to see more people recommending Chris Pye's book which is a great resource for woodcarvers, I've been touting it as the Woodcarvers Bible since the original edition came out back in 1994, said so in a few messages here as I recall.
Heck I even bought the new two edition version as well.
My original single book has seen so much use with it's dog eared pages making it twice as thick as it was when new.
All his other books are great resources as well, I guess I would say the Carving on Turnings was the weakest one in my opinion, but still worthwhile.
I read he is going to be doing future articles in WCI, which means that a great magazine is going to get greater.

I've been a Chris Pye fan for years, and find his newletters very informative and entertaining. He's pretty brutal about being committed to carving and improving your carving skills. But he's right; practice, practice, practice...
I'd like to take his summer course in relief and decorative carving in Maine, but my June's are pretty busy months and I haven't made the time yet. Someday....
