Default Carving dampened wood

Any thoughts on dampening wood to carve it, especially end grain?

Seems to soften it.

I have a mixture of water and alcohol in a spray bottle on my bench and use it when I get a tough piece of basswood. Sometimes I spray the whole carving and put it in a ziplock bag. I find it really helps.

I agree with Doug, I leave the wood in the ziplock overnight. Next day it's like a new piece of wood.

Dave

BTW - My mixture is 50 / 50

Gil Drake says that when your basswood starts feeling a little too hard, sharpen your tools.

Hope this helps, Tom
