Just tell everyone there how much you admire their work and you'll immediately be accepted as a member of the group.

If you've got more than one project that you're in the middle of, bring a couple. If you reach a stopping point/get bored/waiting for help from an otherwise occupied instructor/etc with one project, you can then pick up another.

Bring a couple scraps of wood to practice a newly-learned technique on.

Get your self one of the steel thread carving gloves as a safety precaution..its not a matter of how your blade will slip, but when.....it will save you some grief ..being laid up..and not being able to carve anything..Bill#1

Our club meets once a week. Some carve, some woodburn, some just visit. No one really cares what you do and all they will offer is helpful advice of comments. (Once a month we hold a pot luck lunch)

Richard..I fully understand. I too have been trying to work up the courage to attend a carving club. I have been working on a Lynn Doughty carving peice from his blog..and I think it is begining to take shape. But, I do know the value of attending a club. As soon as I can bring a carving piece that does not look like a blob with eyes I will show up.

I'm going to disagree with you Ed. The time to go to a club meeting is now. They can teach you to carve correctly before you get set into a lot of bad habits. Also, every one of those guys started out making designer fire wood just like your blob with eyes. You can learm more from a good carver in a day than you will learn on your own in months.

take care,
Dan

Thumbs up Re: carving club?

I was invited to visit/join a club. The people were delighted to have me attend, helped me get started, provided funny feedback, and turn out to be some of the greatest people I know. Naturally, I joined. Best $10 I've spent in years! Accepting advice is optional, but it is all useful. I quit cutting myself (let's hear it for Kevlar and decent technique).
It's a reasonable mix of men and women aged 15 to 88. We share the craft and our lives.
I find it interesting that MANY of the members are into scouting.
We have an well enforced rule of no politics, religion or just plain bad temperament.
