Richard,
I doubt anyone at the club meeting would look at you as an idiot. If you take a pocket knife and some wood to whittle on, I'm sure you wouldn't be alone. Or, for your first meeting, just show up and see what takes place.

take your tools and some wood to work on.a small note book and pencil or pen and a small ruler...i say this because the first club meeting i went to ,they were having a mini class and i had to borrow these items so i always pack them because you may also just get some tips you want to write down,or peoples names and numbers..take your tools also, because they actually were having a sharpening demo that day and being new at the timeit sure helped me when they offered to tune up my tools for me.main thing just enjoy!

I have been to club meetings where the pocket knife and piece of wood from the parking lot was in order, as well as the guy with the big rolling tool box with the two smaller boxes on top with the power strop on top of that. I say go witht he tools you will use on your piece and you will be happy. If you need something and dont have it some are touchy about loaning tools. JMHO

Take your tools and some wood with you. If you aren't sure whether the meeting is a meeting, or a carve-along, leave the tools and wood in the car when you go into the meeting. It's easy enough to walk back out to the car and get your stuff, once you see what others are doing.

Richard,

I agree with Daddio and Claude, take your tools, something to work on AND a previous carving or two if you have them. You never know what might be going on at the meeting, and the members might be curious about your work.

Our meetings vary - sometimes it's just carving, sometimes it's demos, classes or show and tell. Our members range from beginners all the way up to carvers with 20, 30 or more years experience

As Carver33 suggested our club meets twice a month. One is sit down and eat business meeting and the other a carving session.
I always felt like an idiot for bringing my "Bucket" of tools while most of others just bought a handful of tools. When I go, I bring my Portable set which happens to be the Flexcut removable gouge variety, strop and knife.

Thanks everyone: I have all my tools in a wooden amunition box from Wally World. I always keep pencils, magic markers note pads and all my sharpening tools and glove in there. I will take 2 or 3 finished sticks with me, I dont know how i can handle carving without my dog laying on my feet.
Thanks.....Richard Underwood WVa

I just joined a carving club and I took a small fishing box with a couple of knifes and a couple of small pieces of basswood. Like Dan said after a couple meetings I took donuts. We meet for a couple hours twice a week
