I made up a small strop I just use for the woodburner....tips last a lot longer if you just strop them a little more often...sandpaper will eventually grind away the tips! imho

I am not Hi Ho but Nope, ya don't have to put on the "Powder stuff" on unless ya want to smell good!

No Marci, You use the leather strop clean.
I use both sandpaper and leather strop alternatingly. One time I will use the sandpaper and the next time I use the burner, the sandpaper, whichever I grab.
I kind of agree with Dave, sandpaper will eventually sand down the tip but usually, in reading the instructions, it says to use sandpaper and most of the cheaper burners come with a little piece of sandpaper. Now it does not have to be a course grit either.

You want to clean the char off it back to the metal part of the tip

Have fun burning. Wear a mask and if you have a fan, point the fan wear the somke is going away from you.

Have fun
