Carvers often mention what they make blades from, I thought I would share some of my early efforts at blade making. When I was very young, I tried to make blades from large nails or spikes; they were way too soft. I have tried allen wrenches, drills, screw drivers, found steel, and tool steel without heat-treatment. I failed with all of them; that's when I learned to heat-treat steel. Some of my successes:tool steel, garage door springs, planer blades, except for the planer blades, the other steels require re-heat-treatment. I have read carving/tool-making books and found that some of the early carvers used straight-razors; including Andy Anderson, Harold Enlow, and Claude Bolton. So I made myself one, and many years later, I still use it. I have also made blades for certain carvers who like a particular blade shape. I made one for Mr. Enlow and he sent back a knife with a barbed-wire handle. |

Harold does have a way of expressing himself. Just did not know that it extended beyond carving. I read these posts about toolmaking and think, now and then, I should try it. Then think, "Nah, I had rather just admire those that have the ability and interest to do it." |
